Change History

This is the running data change history.  This is for those who want all the details of all the additions and updates made to the data used to generate the maps.  This was something done at the beginning of the project and lapsed when the maps moved to the blog and revived again in March 2017. Its purpose is to allow transparency into what goes into the maps and why.

The most recent changes are at the top.

20170328SSPVolhynia colony group - began indicating which Stumpp map the village was a part of, Polish-Volhynia or Ukrainian-Volhynia. Sources listed as of this date don't clearly indicate this, but the German Russian Handbook does. The designation Ukrainian-Volhynia or Polish-Volhynia only applies to the years between 1920 (Treaty of Versailles terms divided Volhynia between Poland and Russia) and 1939 (Poland ceded its section to the USSR.) Given that there are few founding dates for Volhynia villages, this information may be of use to researchers who know when their families were in a particular village than changed countries.

20170317SSPCopied dorf-master file last updated 13 March by DGB as a base for the new map-master file, which will be edited to new standards, and used for all map updates going forward. The goal is to ensure maps are easy to use and there are sufficient sources to support the data presented for each village. Standardization includes: call out Defunct villages in the current name field; additional field for AKAs and alternate spellings to make the labels on the maps easier to read; remove multiple current village names/spellings and use the name that appears on Google Maps; include a link to current villages, which often provides photos, Wikipedia links and other information about the current status of the place; if sufficient sources are not available, explain why the villags is still on the map; note any conflicting source and the conclusions made from them.
SSPCreated new field named "Other Names, Spellings" for AKAs. Purpose is to make the map labels clearer for users. Some villages have 4 or more names and spelling variations, all of which show up on the pin label, slows the map rendering down. The two more common names will appear under Ancestral Names, with the remaining names and alternate spellings and character sets under the new field. All remain searchable.
